  3. Welcome to the Newton Package Installer!  The Newton Package Installer (NPI) provides a quick and easy way to install packages from your Macintosh computer onto your Newton device.

  5. NOTE: Newton Package Installer requires System 7.0 or later.

  8. Ñ Installing Newton Package Installer:
  9.             
  10.             1)  Open the folder named "Newton Package Installer".
  11.     
  12.             2)  Select the Apple Modem Tool and AppleTalk ADSP Tool and drag them on top of 
  13.                         your System folder.
  14.  
  15.             3)  You will be asked if you want these tools placed in the extensions folder, 
  16.                         select O.K.     You may already have a copy of these tools in the extensions 
  17.                         folder.  Go ahead and replace them if prompted by the desktop.  However, if 
  18.                         you have a more recent version on you desktop, you may choose to cancel.

  20.                         IMPORTANT:  Older versions of the Apple Modem tool and AppleTalk ADSP Tool 
  21.                             will not work with Newton Package Installer.

  23.             4)  NPI is ready to use.

  25. Note:  If you would like to have a copy on your desktop for future use with other Newton software, you should drag the NPI icon (found in the same Newton Package Installer folder as the Modem and ADSP tools) on to your Hard Drive.

  28. Ñ Installing Packages with NPI

  30.             1)  Connect your Mac OS computer and your MessagePad using a serial cable or 
  31.                         LocalTalk cables.  
  32.  
  33.             2)  On the Newton Business Solutions CD-ROM, locate the package or packages you 
  34.                         wish to install.
  35.  
  36.             3)  Either double click on the package or drag it to the NPI icon to begin 
  37.                         installation.

  39.             4)  The first time you use the Newton Package Installer, a message will ask you 
  40.                         to specify the kind of connection you're using.  Click Serial or LocalTalk.
  41.  
  42.             5)  On your MessagePad, tap Extras to open the Extras Drawer, then tap 
  43.                         Connection.
  44.  
  45.             6)  Tap the kind of connection your using (Macintosh Serial or Macintosh 
  46.                         LocalTalk).  If you're connecting via LocalTalk, you also need to tell the 
  47.                         MessagePad where the Mac OS computer is located on the network.

  49.             7)  Tap Connect to begin Installation.

  51.             8)  When the installation is complete, you can quit Newton Package Installer.
